She writes short stories and is a freelance writer among other things. She has completed a short story collection and her work has won awards.

Many who write short stories could benefit from Short Story Marketing. Publications vary in what they pay and it can be frustrating trying to earn money from writing

At Tara Lynne's site, www.writenaked.net we find many past articles on writing. Today in her newsletter she addressed the question, How Much Should I Charge for a Speaking Engagement? She gives an answer and tells what she charges. She also tells what to charge for travel costs by car. Tara Lynne is a fount of information. I suggest that writers subscribe to her newsletter and read her blog posts. She doesn't fill your Inbox all the time, but when she sends out her news, it is filled with useful information.

Finding an agent you like and can work with is difficult. One writer says she wasted a year with an agent who she finally realized was not that interested in her books.

Some people find the perfect agent and give that person accolades for all the help given to the author. In the above post by Lyn Hawks, writers can see the journey toward the published book is not straight and easy. Perseverance seems to be the most important virtue of the author who has books on the shelves in Barnes and Noble and on Amazon. How about receiving over 100 rejections? Would you stay with it that long?

Tara Lynne Groth (www.taralynnegroth.com) is a writer in North Carolina. Before writing full-time she was a marketing manager, and before that, a public relations director. She instructs classes on book marketing, author marketing, freelance writing, as well as creative writing workshops. As a blogger and content creator she also handles content marketing and manages social media for clients. As a journalist, her bylines have appeared  in Blue Ridge Outdoors, Chapel Hill News, Draft, and dozens more. 

Tara Lynne received a scholarship in 2009 to attend the Southampton Writers Conference for fiction, her poetry has appeared in multiple journals and anthologies, she received honorable mention in fiction in the 2015 Carolina Woman Writing Contest, and was a semifinalist for the 2015 James Applewhite Poetry Prize. In 2014, her poetry was selected as part of a community art project in Winston-Salem and was used to inspire two sculptures. She has published three poetry books.

She is also the founder and organizer of Triangle Writers and Asheville Writers, two groups with more than 1,000 members collectively. In 2011 she launched her blog WriteNaked.net, which has grown into a popular destination for individuals interested in making their living from writing. On the blog she breaks down misconceptions people have about freelance life, includes interviews with publishers, provides behind-the-scenes scoop on writers conferences, and has nearly 1,000 subscribers - and she pays guest bloggers.

Looking into 2016

Writers Circle around the Table, my studio in Hayesville, NC, will not hold a writing class in October. In November, Karen Holmes will teach a  poetry class. See more on the Schedule Page.

We already have two instructors on the calendar for 2016. A poet, publisher and visual artist, for the first time, will join our group of writers and poets who have taught here in the past six years. 

Jonathan Rice, publisher of Iodine will hold a workshop in June. 

In July, we will welcome back the terrific writer and instructor, Steven Harvey, author of his most recent publication, The Book of Knowledge and Wonder. The comments from his class here this year were the class was not long enough, and this was after a three hour class.

We hope to  have Tara Lynne Groth back to speak on another subject. Her class on marketing and publishing made our heads swim with all the information she had to offer.

All We Need to Know about Publishing and Marketing from Tara Lynne

Today is February 4,  2015. 

I am in Asheville, NC in a comfortable motel that did  not spray Febreeze or any air freshener in my room. Thank you, Comfort Inn  Biltmore West Asheville.

This  afternoon, Carol Crawford, poet, writer, editor and director of the Blue Ridge Writers' Conference, joined me for a trip here to attend a workshop for writers on publishing and marketing by Tara Lynne Groth. Tara Lynne was scheduled to teach at Writers' Circle on Saturday, but we had to cancel for  lack of interest. I am so sorry you all missed this opportunity.

This young woman gave us three hours chock full of valuable information for anyone who wants to publish  -- traditionally or by  going the  self-publishing route. As we all know, writing a book, publishing a book, is only the beginning of being successful as a writer. Writers must educate themselves on how to get the word out to the public that a book is for sale and why the public should purchase it and read it.

 Tara Lynne knows her stuff. Although she told us she would send us the text on the slides, I found myself taking tons of  notes as she revealed more and more simple and necessary methods for publicizing writing.

Whether we write poetry or prose, the knowledge we need to successfully market ourselves and  our books was discussed in this workshop. I like that she explained ways to keep from spending too much time online, yet use our time efficiently when we are there. 

I enjoyed, so much, having time with my friend, Carol, to talk writing and catch up on what is new in our lives. I hope to do more things such as this with my friends this year. Want to join me on a writer trip?
