I will be performing with my friend, Mary Michelle Keller  this Thursday, October 17, 7:00 PM at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC.

We would love to see our friends in the audience at the Keith House, Community Room.

Mary Mike and I have prepared a program of poems on similar themes and we will take turns reading instead of one person reading for twenty minutes and the other person reading for an allotted time.

Jim Davis is also on the program that evening. Jim writes true stories about his eventful life.

The folk school students often turn out for our programs, and I hope they are present this week.

We have such a good time at Writers Night Out in Blairsville, GA. 

Karen always creates an excellent schedule of prose writers and poets and still has time for Open Mic.

For those of us who live in Union, Towns, Clay and Cherokee Counties, this is a perfect way to spend a Friday evening - have dinner, meet with our writing friends, hear a couple of excellent writers and read a poem or short piece of prose.

I am happy that Michelle Keller and I will be featured readers May 10, 7:00 p.m. 
Mary Mike, my friend, writes poetry that is memorable and shows her knowledge of what makes a good poem.
She is one of the busiest people I know, and one of the most knowledgeable people I know. No matter what I need she can tell me what to do or she can come over and take care of it. But she is a dear friend who is always there for me as I am for her.

Coffee with the Poets made a big splash this month

Wednesday was Coffee with the Poets day in Hayesville, NC at Cafe Touche.
Mary Mike Keller, one of the Writers Circle faculty, along with a long time friend, Glenda Barrett, each read their original work for a packed house.

This event is sponsored by Netwest and has been running since 2007. Over the years we enjoyed local poets and writers as well as guests who traveled many miles to read here.

I am excited that two of my students, Nadine Justice and Barb Gabriel read at open mic and their work was evidently appreciated by the warm applause each received.

We gave a door prize yesterday - a copy of The Best of Poetry Hickory, an anthology of poets who read in 2011 at  Poetry Hickory held at Taste Full Beans Coffeehouse in Hickory, NC. This event is led by Scott Owens, poet and NCWN rep for that area.
I am happy that the winner of the book was none other than Nancy Simpson, my mentor and teacher of poetry.

BRING YOUR CHARACTERS TO LIFE



Jackie gives great advice about characterization. I have saved this to refer to when I attempt my next piece of fiction. I enjoy taking a prompt like the ones I receive in my Inbox almost every day from Peggy Millan.

When I don't have time to work on that prompt that day, I save it in an e-mail folder so I can always find something handy to prick my sensitivities and provoke me to write. Whether I write fiction or non-fiction or poetry, the prompts in my arsenal help me overcome my writer's block.

Our classes at my studio in Hayesville, NC - Writers' Circle - is prompting writers and those who want to be writers to get out their pens and keyboards.

Mary Michelle Keller's class at Writers' Circle beginning Wednesday, May 19 and continuing for the next two weeks, involves a bit of genealogy and a bit of writing. The class is filling and space is limited. Anyone who plans to take the class needs to contact Mary Mike now to give her time to do the research needed before the day of class. mmkeller@brmemc.net

Soon we will add Paul Donovan as one of our instructors. Look for more on his classes in July or August.

2011 Looks Good at Writers Circle

WRITERS CIRCLE IN SPRING

Writers Circle will start classes in March of 2011. I am happy to note that instructors from last year will be back. Estelle Rice, Rosemary Royston, Michelle Keller, Paul Donovan, Karen Holmes and I will teach from March through September.
