Abbie said, "We all should read books like this to understand how we, as a nation, did a disservice to Native Americans by forcing them onto reservations, placing their children in government-run boarding schools, and commandeering their land. Remember that Indians were here before any of the first settlers came to this country in the 1600’s."
I hope we never do this kind of disservice to any other group of human beings.

Sadly on this side of the world we did similar disservices to our first peoples. And they are still catching up.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Glenda, for showcasing my work. Unfortunately, Indians aren't the only population to whom we've done a disservice. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, we rounded up many innocent Japaneese citizens living in this country and sent them to internment camps. Then of course there were the blacks who were brought to this country against their will to be slaves and treated as second class citizens even after they were free.
ReplyDeleteIt takes away some of my pride in country when I think of the horrible things our forefathers did to native Americans and to slaves. I can only do my part to make it a better country and try to do no harm. I subscribe to the newspaper of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee here in NC. I find it so interesting to learn how they govern their people and what upsets them in today's world. This week I learned that the Lumbee Native Americans were upset when they saw their people portrayed in a store with a beer advertisement. With the alcohol problem among their people they don't want anything connecting them with beer or other alcoholic drinks.
ReplyDeleteThis week I also saw where the leaders of the tribe are hoping to get a Wal-Mart store on the reservation. Then they can buy trinkets made in China. lol. In the past tourists have visited the town of Cherokee NC to buy their handmade souvenirs.
